Then, remove its lid, tube and upper chamber, then place it over the heat source. Pour 6 ounces of fresh, cold water per cup into its lower chamber while making sure that the water level is not above the line of the suggested maximum fill. Your water must be below the bottom of the upper chamber. When it begins to boil, add 1 to 2 tablespoon of coffee per cup to the upper chamber.  Reduce the heat and lit it work for 6 or 7 minutes. You may add a coffee filter, it could be a one designed for a percolator or a regular round filter with a hole punched through the center of the tube. Why is it good to use filter? In order for you to prevent grounds form getting into your coffee.

Then, replace the tube and upper chamber as the tube will go through the hole in the middle of the upper chamber. Place the perforated top on the upper chamber, replace its lid, plug it and turn it on. After that, you can select your desired brewing time if it’s available in your machine. Let the percolator works for you and as soon as your coffee is ready you can switch it off and pour your coffee directly into your cup.

Here are some tips on how to make a great coffee using an electric percolator:

Before to start brewing, make sure that your coffee grounds are evenly arranged in the chamber and none is inside the hole in the middle of the chamber to prevent blockage. Before putting the grounds into the machine, tap the basket firmly on your counter.

After using your electric percolator you can clean its removable parts with hot, soapy water. Unplug your machine and rinse it well or you can wipe it with a soapy sponge. You may use a pipe cleaner to clean the inside portion of the tube. If you missed this step there might be a buildup of coffee that can cause unpleasant taste on your next pot.

You also have to take note of these following safety measures.

  • Unlug your percolator when you’re not using it.
  • Never leave children unattended when near the device.
  • Secure its cord from heat or possible hazards.
  • Allow all parts to cool before moving or cleaning.
  • Use only one percolator per outlet (110-120 volt AC current)
  • Do not immerse cord, plug in water or other liquids.
