How much coffee for 10 cups?
It isn’t always easy to measure your coffee and the right proportion of water. Take note that common mug that you use when drinking your coffee is not a unit of measure. All mugs come in different sizes and a typical mug holds two metric cups. You will not be measuring water in ounces and coffee in grams. So how much coffee for 10 cups is needed?
A simple fine ground coffee has a same measurement of a stronger cup of coffee to a coarse ground coffee. Thus, experts create a simpler recommendations:
Add .36 oz or 10 grams of ground coffee per 6 oz cup. You might ask of how much is a .36 oz of ground coffee or what is 6 oz cup? Well, a coffee cup is about 6 fluid ounces while a coffee mug contains about 8 or 9 fluid ounces. But there are many other ways to measure .36 oz. First, you can use a coffee scoop. A level coffee scoop can hold two tablespoons of coffee, which is approximately 10 grams or .36 ounces. So you will use two tablespoons or one coffee scoop of ground coffee for every 6 fluid ounces.
You may consider as well that some coffee pot manufacturer deviate from 6 oz per cup standard. Better check the total water capacity of your pot before assuming it measured 6 oz cups. It may vary from coffee to coffee of your pot, freshness and variety. But most coffee makers used 1 tbsp kitchen measuring spoon and make a scoop of 2 tbsp of ground coffee. Or if you want to be precise of everything, you can use digital scales to weigh your coffee to the nearest gram. So you can add 1 coffee scoop of ground coffee for every 6 fluid ounces of water (cups) and 1 1/3 coffee scoops for every 8-9 ounces of water (mugs). If you have an 8-cup coffee maker, you can pour 8 x 6 ounce cups of water in the reservoir and 8 level scoops of coffee to the filler basket.
If you feel like drinking a little stronger coffee and make enough for 8 x 6 ounce cups and use 10 or 12 scoops. You can experiment according to your taste and it helps you find what suits you best.
Aside from the above recommendation, we should first determine of much coffee per cup, of what is its measures and ratios. A cup here is not referring to a cup used in cooking. As most coffee machine manufacturers, they define a cup as 5 oz of liquid which is equivalent to 150 milliliters. So, we will refer to liquid ounces (30 ml) as fl. oz. and 5 fl. oz. as one cup.
However, if you opt to try this and it taste worsen than you think well, you might ignore this standard they have set.
Maybe you will be confused with all the conversions so it is way better to convert everything down to common measures such as grams and milliliters.
1 cup=16 tablespoon or 1 tablespoon=1/16th cup
A standard coffee measure should be 2 Tbsp (2 Tbsp=1/8 cup=10.6 g).
Another measurement used is through a scoop. A coffee scoop is typically 1 tablespoon (tbsp) and there are some double-sided coffee scoops. With 1 tbsp on one end and 2 tbsp on the other. But regardless of the scoop, you may want to use 2 tbsp (10g of coffee) per 180 ml (6 fl.oz) of water.
So how much coffee for 10 cups?
5 x 10 =50 fl. oz.
50 fl. oz. =1500 ml.
Using the 1:18 golden ratio, you can get 83 grams of coffee for 10 cups. But on some coffee machines measure differ from this. You may take note these brands and their machine-specific recommended brewing ratios:
- Brew Sense Drip Coffee Maker KF7150BK – 12 tablespoons (10g/each) per 12 cups (60 fl. oz)

This standard is created by Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). They defined a cup as 6 ounces (180 ml) of water before brewing thus, it will produce 5.33 ounces of brewed coffee. But other people just want to keep things what’s best works for them. They recommended the following conversions of how many oz in a cup (coffee weight to water volume).
3.75 oz (106 gras) per ½ gallon (64 oz., 10.6 cups)
55 grams per liter (33 oz, 5.5 cups)
1 lb. (454 grams, 16 oz) per 2.25 gallons (288 oz, 48 cups)
Percolator: 1 lb. (16 oz) per 100 cup (600 oz)
